| Gardening is Good for the Soul & Environment |
 |
Green Thumb Nursery helps complete the
recycling loop by selling Agromin products. |
They say that gardening is good
for the soul. Why,
then, fly to Hawaii or
drive up the coast to get
away from it all when
all you have to do is step
outside to your garden
for a little rest and relaxation? And you will
be saving all of those
"carbon emissions".
Transportation is a major contributor to global
warming, so help reduce
carbon emissions and
plant a tree or plant.
Spending a few hours
in the yard planting flowers
and growing vegetables—even mowing the lawn—is a
great way to forget about your
troubles and escape from the
pressures of everyday life. It
can also save you a few bucks
from your grocery bill. You
can't beat it!
Gardening is good for the
environment, too. You know
all those grass clippings, tree
branches and leaves that you
place in your tan green waste
container? Well, they go to good use. For the
past 15 years, our trucks have transported them
to California Wood Recycling, which uses cutting-edge technology to convert the green waste
materials into organic mulches, compost, wood
chips and other products that naturally fertilize
plants and trees. Time and effort have finally
paid off and bagged
products are now available locally—you can
| |
now get what was previously only available in
bulk at a local store.
In Ventura, Green
Thumb has stepped
up to the plate and to
do their part by selling
local environmentally
tested soil-from your
tan can to their selling
shelves—PLEASE TRY
IT—you will be forever
pleased by the results.
These products, under the Agromin label,
help reduce the use of non-organic fertilizers, pesticides
and herbicides—making our
air and water cleaner. They
also save valuable space in
landfills, thus completing
the green waste recycling
loop.
Agromin has developed
and manufactured more
than 240 premium soil products, now sold at 41 retail
locations in Ventura County
and throughout Southern
California.
You also can order Agromin products online
in addition to learning valuable gardening tips
from the company's "Gardening Xperts" by visiting www.agromin.com.

24th California Coastal Cleanup Day is Sept. 20
Ventura residents: Here's your chance to be
part of the solution to marine pollution! Join
the tens of thousand of participants statewide
who will be clearing debris from our beaches,
shorelines and inland waterways on Saturday, Sept.
20, during the 24th annual California Coastal Cleanup
Day.
On this day, 50,000 volunteers will turn out to
more than 700 cleanup sites statewide to conduct
what has been hailed by the Guinness Book of World
Records as "the largest garbage collection." Since the
program started in 1985, nearly 700,000 Californians
have removed more than 10 million pounds of debris
from our state's shorelines and coasts.
Coming at the end of the summer beach season
and right near the start of the school year, Coastal
Cleanup Day is a great way for families, students, service
groups, and neighbors to join together, take care
of our fragile marine environment, show community
support for our shared natural resources, learn about
the impacts of marine debris and how we can prevent
harmful impacts and have fun!
Coastal Cleanup Day runs from 9 a.m. to noon.
There are close to 20 cleanup sites in Ventura County.
For participating beaches and waterways, call 1-800-COAST-4U, or visit www.coastal.ca.gov.

Practice Extreme
Recycling this Summer
E.J. Harrison & Sons, Inc., is happy to
offer additional recycling services for
Ventura residents through our latest contract
with the City of Ventura.
Super-size your recycling! Order an
Extra Large recycling cart at no extra cost!
If your recyclables are
spilling out of your cart on
pick-up day, call us at 647-1414 and request a 50%
larger recycling cart (96
gallon), free of charge!
Recycle your rigid
plastics: E.J. Harrison
accepts rigid plastics
like toys, buckets, margarine and
yogurt tubs, nursery flats and flower
pots in your blue recycling barrel.
You still can't place plastic bags in
your recycling bin, but please be
sure to take advantage of plastic bag
recycling offered at most grocery
stores.
Recycle your athletic shoes: From now on, do not toss your old
tennis shoes into your trash bin. Place them
in your blue recycling container, along with
your paper, glass and plastics. Nike, the
shoe giant, collects the shoes and grinds
them into rubberized material
that is used in the construction
of new synthetic athletic
fields. Since Nike
began its Reuse-A-Shoe
program, it has helped
donate more than 250 sport surfaces to
communities around the world.
Need an extra green waste barrel? For you avid gardeners out there as well as
for those of you with large
yards whose barrels always
seem to be overflowing,
relief is here. For just $3 a
month, E.J. Harrison & Sons
will provide you with an additional
green waste barrel.
For more information,
call 647-1414 or visit www.ejharrison.com.

Recycle Your Used
Batteries & Light Bulbs

Ever wonder what to do with your used batteries or light bulbs? The short answer is
to hold on to them and then take them to Gold
Coast Recycling, or wait for the next City of
Ventura Hazardous Waste Collection event. As
of February 2006 it became illegal in California
to dispose of batteries, electronic waste and
fluorescent light bulbs in your trash.
Batteries are prohibited from entering the
landfill because they contain heavy metals
and other hazardous materials that may leach
out from landfills into the air, soil and groundwater. The best way to reduce the number of
batteries in the waste stream is to purchase
rechargeable batteries. However, if you must
buy regular batteries, make sure the spent
batteries are properly recycled. Visit the City's
Environmental Services website at www.venturasenvironment.com for a list of locations,
or call 652-4525 for more information.
Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL)
Bulbs last up to 13 times longer and use 75%
less electricity than traditional bulbs. However,
CFLs also contain a trace amount of mercury,
a substance toxic to humans.
Bring your old batteries, CFLs, and
other hazardous waste to one of the
City of Ventura's FREE household
hazardous waste collection events
held on the third Saturday of every
month. Ventura residents must call 652-4525 to set up an appointment. |

Composting the
Earth-Friendly Way
Have you ever considered composting
your own yard and kitchen waste? A
growing number of your neighbors are doing
it. Why not join them? Composting is fun—and easy!
Composting helps the environment by
turning various organic materials into a soil
amendment that you can use to fertilize your
garden. You don't need any special knowledge or equipment, and it takes only a little
extra effort to collect your wastes and establish an active compost pile.
You can build your own compost bin. It
can be made of wood, concrete blocks, wire
mesh or almost any material you have available. Or, you can purchase one at just about
any home improvement store.
Once you've got it going, composting just
about takes care of itself.
What you can add to your compost pile:
- Paper
- Plant stems
- Twigs
- Hay & straw
- Leaves
- Hedge clippings
- Annual weeds
- Old flowers & plants
- Grass clippings
- Crushed eggshells
- Tea bags
- Coffee grounds
- Fruit & vegetable peelings
Although the following materials will decompose, they are not suitable for composting:
- Meat & fish scraps
- Diseased plants
- Cooked food scraps
- Bones
- Dog or cat litter
- Dairy products

Recycling, Yard Waste and Trash Guidelines |
What goes in the Trash?
Hopefully, very little.
After you have recycled,
composted, filled the yard waste cart, donated
old clothing and goods, and done all of those good things and more– most of the rest can go in the trash. |
 |
How to Place Your Cart for
Automated Collection
The automated
arm of the collection
truck needs
room to grab
the cart. Carts
should be placed
2-3 feet apart from each other and from objects
such as mailboxes and cars with the wheels facing the curb.
Carts should be out
by 7:00 a.m. on collection days.
|
What Doesn't go in the Trash
or any other cart?
STOP No Hazardous
Waste!!
These items are NOT accepted for
Trash or Recycling.
- Hazardous Waste
- Tires
- TVs/Computer Monitors
- Batteries
|
 |
- Closed Containers
