Happy Thanksgiving from the Harrison Family!
The Harrison Family wishes you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving! As we enter the holiday season, we reflect on the things for which we are most grateful. Primarily among them are our customers and employees who make it all happen with great customer service. We are very proud of all of our employees who have made our 84 years in business possible.

We hope you have a wonderful time with your loved ones and eat to your heart's content.  But Thanksgiving means more than just a large shared meal with family and friends. It is a time to stop and think about how fortunate we are to live and work in a country that allows us so much freedom.

In addition, we thank members of our military for protecting our freedom, especially those serving our country overseas. We wish them a safe Thanksgiving and a speedy return home.

Again, here's to a Happy Thanksgiving for you and the ones you love!

Gala & Auction Benefits 'Superheroes in the Making'

"Superheroes in the Making" was the fitting theme of the 49th annual Great Futures Gala & Auction held Nov. 5 at the Ventura Beach Marriott and benefitting the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Ventura.

Harrison Industries served as corporate sponsor at the gala and auction and the Harrisons were out in force, with 33 family members attending, led by President Ralph Harrison and Vice President Myron Harrison and their wives Jenny and Sharon. They were among the more than 200 supporters who enjoyed the cocktail reception, dinner, silent and live auctions and musical entertainment.

Sales Manager David Harrison and his wife Sandy also attended. David is on the club's Board of Directors and co-chaired this wonderful event that raised about $140,000, according to club CEO Patti Birmingham.

Proceeds benefit more than 3,500 local kids and their families at four club sites throughout Ventura, giving them, as the B&GCGV motto says, "A Positive Place for Kids." Many of the kids, dressed in their favorite superhero outfits, greeted guests as they arrived.

Harrison Reaches 'Zero Waste' Again at California Avocado Festival
The 30th annual California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria, held Oct. 7-9, proved to be another "Zero Waste" event, as virtually all waste generated at the festival was recycled.

For the sixth consecutive year, we placed yellow-lid recycling barrels around the festival grounds specifically for disposed food waste and paper products. The materials were delivered to our strategic partner Agromin, which is undertaking a pilot food waste program.

Donald Sealund, Harrison's food waste coordinator (center) and employees Dean Colmenero (left) and Cody Harkman worked hard at the festival.
The barrels with the blue lids were for recyclables such as aluminum cans, glass bottles and plastic materials along with non-food trash. These materials were sorted at our other strategic partner, Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station.

Donald Sealund, Harrison Industries' food waste coordinator, reports that 3.41 tons of food waste and 11.27 tons of mixed recyclables were collected and diverted from our landfills.

Harrison employees Cody Harkman and Dean Colmenero were Donald's main helpers. They were on site four days, setting up on Thursday and working all three days of the festival. The Harrisons and I thank them for their dedication.

Thanks also to the 100,000-plus festival-goers who did their part by placing materials in the correct barrels. Good job!
16th Annual 'Taste of Ojai' Benefits Ojai Valley Students
The Ojai Valley Inn & Spa provided a gorgeous setting for the 16th annual "Taste of Ojai" benefit on Oct. 23.

More than 500 people attended the "Taste of Ojai" event at the golf course's picturesque 10th green. The event featured delicious appetizers, gourmet foods and desserts, and beverages from a variety of celebrated restaurants, caterers and wineries in the Ojai Valley. There also was live entertainment, dancing, and a new silent auction with very special gourmet items, unique local art and Ojai adventures.

I attended this wonderful event and can vow to its success. Harrison Industries is a "Very Special Donor" of "Taste of Ojai" that supports the Rotary Club of Ojai Educational Foundation. The Rotary Club of Ojai and its Educational Foundation have raised nearly $1 million over the last two decades with "Taste of Ojai" being their primary fundraising event.

Nearly $70,000 in scholarships is awarded each spring to Ojai students for fall enrollment at a recognized college, university, community college or technical school, with over 300 scholarships awarded to date. In addition each year more than $30,000 in community grants are awarded to Ojai schools and non-profit organizations.
Economic Forecaster Has Good News for Ventura County
Harrison Industries was a sponsor of the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce's Economic Outlook Luncheon Nov. 3 at Las Posas Country Club. Mark Schniepp, Ph.D, director of the California Economic Forecast, was the featured speaker.

Harrison President Ralph Harrison, Vice President Myron Harrison, General Manager Lynn Harrison, Controller Mike Marostica, George Harrison, general manager of Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station and I were among area community and business leaders who attended.

Schniepp's presentation was overall very positive. He said a booming labor market that has created jobs for nearly everyone who wants one should drive salaries higher next year in Ventura County and keep the recession at bay. He added that county residents are working and spending money again, which has provided economic stimulus that should carry through 2017.

Schniepp expects building in the county to gradually increase and median home values to surge, which, however, will make it difficult to recruit and retain workers.

Overall, good economic news, for sure.
Ex-Eagles Lead Guitarist Don Felder Headlines Health System Benefit Concert
Several members of the Harrison family attended the Oct. 22 concert at Ojai's Libbey Bowl featuring former Eagles lead guitarist Don Felder.

The concert, billed "Don Felder, an Evening at the Hotel California," was put on by the Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation and Ojai Valley Community Hospital Foundation.  Funds raised will support Community Memorial Health System construction projects - the building of a new Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, scheduled to open in 2017 - and a new Continuing Care Center in Ojai.

Felder and his former bandmates are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with five number-one singles, six Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards and six number-one albums. The Eagles were one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s, and at the end of the 20th century, two of their albums, "Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)" and "Hotel California" were ranked among the 20 best-selling albums in the U.S.

Felder played several Eagles hits, but he brought down the house with "Hotel California," which he also co-wrote.

It was a great dinner and concert!
