Harrison Industries is Represented Well at WasteExpo 2016
Jim Harrison stands in front of a photo of his father (E. J. Harrison) who was named in 1990 to the Waste Age Hall of Fame. Jim, Ralph, Jenny Harrison and I represented the company at the WasteExpo 2016 at the Las Vegas Convention Center earlier this month. There was a lot to learn about advances in technology, especially for food waste recycling. While we were there we also visited the Hall of Fame.
Boy Scouts Hold 40th Annual Denim & Diamonds Dinner
Ralph and Jenny Harrison
Members of the Harrison family turned out once again to support the 40th annual Ventura County Council, Boy Scouts of America Denim and Diamonds Dinner & Auction, held Friday, June 10 at the Camarillo Ranch House.

Harrison Industries is proud to support community organizations dedicated to fostering the growth and development of local young men and women. We had two tables at the dinner this year and had a blast. Ralph Harrison, a former Eagle Scout during his youth, wouldn't miss this event for the world!

Kids Benefit Auction & Dinner Supports Boys & Girls Club
(L to R) Paul Wright-Island Brewing, Joyce Donaldson, Nan Drake, Andy Sheaffer, Micheline Miglis-Superintendent of Carpinteria Schools and John Thomas-Board Member.

The 32nd annual Carpinteria Kids Benefit Auction & Dinner took place June 4 at the Carpinteria Club with over 300 people attending. This event is filled with community spirit and brought together businesses, families and friends to support the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County and its clubhouse in Carpinteria.

This annual auction and dinner is a huge tradition that unites the Carpinteria community, and over 300 people turned out this year. The auction and dinner raised almost $115,000 - the most ever raised in event history!

This year, the event honored two community leaders, Gary Dobbins from the Carpinteria Coastal View News and Dr. Walter Barrows, whose $30,000 donation will help fund scholarships to send Carpinteria kids to summer camp as well as help to renovate the teen center to create space for pre-teens.

Harrison Industries was among the sponsors of this event that included great food, 300 silent auction items and 14 live auction items, offering something for everyone!  Attending this enjoyable and worthwhile event with me were several Harrison family members, including Vice President Jim Harrison, President Ralph Harrison and his wife Jenny, General Manager Lynn Harrison and his wife Patty, and Sales Manager David Harrison with wife Sandy.

Businesses Celebrate Ventura's 150th Birthday at the Ventura Chamber Business Expo
Nan Drake and Peter Gutierrez
"Celebrating Ventura's 150th" was the theme of the Ventura Chamber of Commerce's semi-annual Business Expo, held May 26 at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel at Ventura Harbor. And what a huge success this busy Expo was!

Harrison Recycling Coordinator Peter Gutierrez and I were among the visitors who enjoyed staffing a booth for Harrison and also browsing at the 75-plus vendor booths and tables. Door prizes from gift cards to gift bags and $100 cash prizes raffled off every hour kept it fun and lively while Ventura businesses shared their products and services and displayed information about their businesses for each other and the general public.

Attendees signed a giant birthday card that will be presented to the City Council. Guests also enjoyed birthday cake provided by Smart & Final and had fun at a free portrait station run by students at Brooks Institute. Chamber committees represented at this free event included Ambassadors, the Young Professionals Group, and Biz Connection.

Peter and I enjoyed sharing historic information about Harrison Industries co-founder Myra Harrison, one of Ventura County's most generous benefactors who passed away in 2014. Born in 1915 in Ventura, Myra was a direct descendent of Lt. Jose Joaquin Moraga, a member of the DeAnza party which founded the San Buenaventura Mission.

Harrison was also a co-sponsor of the expo. Harrison Industries believes it's important for everyone to learn about their roots - and also know the history of Ventura!
Top Wines and Craft Beers Highlighted the Ojai Wine Festival

Over 3,000 wine connoisseurs and beer enthusiasts had a blast sampling more than 250 wines from 63 participating wineries and enjoying 34 different craft beers and ciders at the 30th annual Ojai Wine Festival on June 12.

Food, live music and boat rides around Lake Casitas on the Rotary Floating Classroom rounded out this fun event at the Lake Casitas Recreation Area. It was overcast but the weather was very comfortable and guests were thrilled it wasn't too hot - especially those who tore up the dance floor to the tunes provided by Santa Barbara's popular dance band Area 51.

Harrison Industries was a Community Support Sponsor and also provided trash and recycling pickup service for the festival. Proceeds from this event go to Rotary of Ojai West projects. I attended the Ojai Wine Festival this year and it was a great event attended by so many. We are very proud to be a sponsor and to know that the funds raised by this fun event are returned to the community.
Congratulations to Father and Son - Fred and David Lopez - On a Job Well Done!
David Lopez
The Harrisons and I would like to congratulate David Lopez upon his graduation from St. Bonaventure High School earlier this month. We know that David has made his dad Fred and David's two brothers very proud. Fred Lopez works for Harrison in field sales.

David is headed off in the fall to Western New Mexico University on a partial football scholarship. A wide receiver in high school, David is the first person in his family to enroll in college!

David grew up in Oxnard and avoided being drawn in by the gangs and bad influences in his neighborhood. He excelled in high school football at St. Bonaventure and is headed off to college with the love and support of dad Fred and Fred's other sons who helped to look out for their brother. Fred, who became a single dad after David's mother left the family when David was little, did a great job in raising a great son!

"Really, I consider what he has done a miracle. I'm so proud. When you think about all the bad things that happened to him, his life could have turned out much different. He is a special kid. He wants to be successful," Fred told the Ventura County Star newspaper in an article about David.

We think David will be successful at whatever he does moving forward. The Harrisons and I wish David all the best of luck in college and continuing success on and off the football field.
Carpinteria Chamber Supports Cancer Patients, Research and the Relay for Life
(L to R) Wade Nomura, Carpinteria City Councilman and Fred Shaw, Carpinteria Vice-Mayor.
Thanks go out to the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce and the entire Carpinteria community for supporting cancer research and patients in the community. The May Chamber Mixer, held the evening of May 25 at Jack's Bistro & Famous Bagels on Carpinteria Avenue, helped spread the word about the community's upcoming Relay For Life. From 5 to 7 p.m., attendees enjoyed a no-host bar, food, live music and a raffle while learning about he Relay for Life in Carpinteria. Carpinteria City Councilman Wade Nomura did a fantastic job as the mixer's emcee.

The Carpinteria Relay for Life takes place July 16 at Aliso Elementary School in Carpinteria. An event of the American Cancer Society, the Relay for Life raises funds for cancer research and cancer patients, spreads cancer awareness, celebrates the lives of survivors, and remembers and honors those who lost their lives to cancer.

104th Annual Fillmore May Festival Was a Success

The 104th Annual Fillmore May Festival, presented by the Fillmore Chamber of Commerce May 19-22, was a great success. This annual event that has been running for over a century in Fillmore had a distinctive hometown feel and made Central Park the place to be! The festival benefits the all-volunteer Fillmore Chamber.

The four-day event in Downtown Fillmore offered plenty of fun for everyone, including a special kids area for younger children, a carnival, arts and crafts, unique food vendors, games, live entertainment, a beer garden, a parade, pancake breakfast, Fillmore & Western Railway rides and more.

Harrison was a sponsor of the festival and provided waste collection services. We also provided waste collection services for another great Fillmore event that took place on June 11 - the 5th Annual 2016 California Honey Harvest Festival & Barbecue Championship  at Central Park, which benefits the non-profit Autism Speaks. Thanks to those who helped us help the environment by placing trash and recyclables in the correct containers.
Camarillo Businesses Showcase Goods and Services at Chamber Expo
Recycling Coordinator Peter Gutierrez held down the Harrison fort at the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce semi-annual Business Expo on June 8.

Held at the Camarillo Public Library, this free event gave Camarillo businesses a great opportunity to showcase their products and services to the public and allowed restaurants to share their best foods with visitors. Prize drawings were another attraction!

Harrison Industries was proud to be among the sponsors of this great Expo.
The 70th Ojai Music Festival is a Success- Again
Peter Sellars, Music Director
The 70th annual Ojai Music Festival at Libbey Bowl went off beautifully June 9-12, with various artists entertaining crowds and free family concerts taking place on the final day, among many other festival-related events in Ojai. Harrison Industries is a longtime corporate sponsor of this culturally enriching event that relies heavily on donor support each year.

Concerts, interviews and talks were streamed live on on all four days of the festival so those who couldn't make it could enjoy the event from their computer, tablet or mobile phone.

This festival helps spread a love of music through the Ojai community, bringing orchestras, chamber ensembles, instrumentalists and renowned soloists, plus a wide range of performers to town. Education events also are part of the annual festival, which showcases music from jazz to electronic to world to dance music and much more. Creativity and innovation are always on tap at the Ojai Music Festival, which this year featured Peter Sellars as the music director, several musical premieres including the world premier of the Josephine Baker Project, and a free concert for all ages performed on a toy piano.
Don't Miss the 22nd Ventura Music Festival July 15-17 and July 22-24
